The Department of Ophthalmic Sciences focuses on the technical and practical aspects of ophthalmic dispensing and optical services for the Doctor of Optometry program. This department will soon introduce a Bachelor of Science in Dispensing Opticianry, which prepares students to meet the demands of the optical industry by teaching skills in lens fitting, optical equipment usage, and ophthalmic technologies.
Students participate in hands-on training both on and off-campus at various affiliated eye clinics, gaining essential skills for professional practice. The department's strong focus on ophthalmic technology ensures that graduates are fully equipped to contribute to the growing field of vision care. The curricula blends theoretical knowledge with practical training in areas such as mechanical optics, visual ergonomics, and contact lens fitting.
In addition to undergraduate programs, the department is developing MPhil and PhD programs in Dispensing Science, Optical Instrument and Eye Wear Technology and Biomedical Optics with the School of Engineering all aimed at further enhancing students’ expertise in ophthalmic technology and optical service management. The curricula is being developed to cover theoretical knowledge with practical training in Advanced Optical Materials and Applications, Innovations in Eyewear Design and Manufacturing, Optomechanics and Instrumentation.
